Measuring Scope 1, 2, 3 GHG Emissions

Client:

A major U.S. based company with a transnational supply chain.

Opportunity:

A global transportation and logistics company headquartered in the U.S. needed it’s Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions calculated. They needed this data to share on RFPs and disclose in various reports. Additionally, they needed this data to serve as their foundation for setting science-based targets. The company did not have a sustainability team at the time, had never conducted an inventory, and had no internal expertise, infrastructure or tools developed to support this effort. They did have employees interested and willing to take this work on in the future and wanted a spreadsheet tool that they could maintain.

Solution:

Uplift partnered with the client to conduct its first GHG emissions inventory following the GHG Protocol and to build out its internal infrastructure so it could repeat the process on its own in future years. This included:

  • Mapping the company’s operational activities to their respective emissions category

  • Quantifying emissions in accordance with the GHG protocol and identifying operational and organizational boundaries.

  • Building their data collection process, documenting the process and methodology and providing recommendations for improvements.

  • Helping the client collect data, identify and fill in data gaps and errors.

  • Conducted a scope 3 assessment report and value chain map

  • Calculate their emissions in a spreadsheet with their unique emissions formulas

  • Created a custom GHG inventory management plan that provides detailed guidance and tools for their team to use in future years.

Outcomes:

The client had an accurate and completed GHG inventory for scope 1, 2, & 3 emissions, a full inventory management plan and support tools, and a trained team that enabled them to do their own report in subsequent years.

  • The client had a strong foundation in place that it utilize as it started to set science-based targets and decarbonize its operations.

Impact: The client had an accurate and valid GHG emissions inventory completed, and had its internal infrastructure, systems, processes, and emissions calculation tools created, so it could conduct the emissions inventory on its own in future years.
